| Growth media and growth conditions for Nostoc punctiforme |

| The Meeks lab routinely grow Nostoc in Allen and Arnon medium (A&A) diluted four fold (see attached recipe). Nostoc will also grow in BG110 so both recipes are included here. For routine maintenance strains are grown in liquid 50 ml quantities inside sterile flasks sealed with cotton stoppers. Flasks of Nostoc are incubated normally at room temperature at about 12-16 inches below 2-3 cool white fluorescent bulbs (20 Watts each) on shaker platforms set at approximately 75-100 rpms. For faster growth and reduced clumpiness the speed of agitation can be increased and the temperature raised to 24-26oC. |
